“Never losing the wave means that, no matter where you end up in life, there is always going to be a wave. Sometimes you have to be patient and wait for the perfect set; other times you have to take risks, even if you may have a major wipeout.”

Surfing wasn’t just a sport to Kristina’s dad. It was his source of connection and inspiration. But when she was fifteen, he took his own life. From her early years in Corpus Christi, Texas, amidst a close family confounded by her father’s alcohol addiction, Kristina recounts the resources that supported her through ongoing and ever-changing grief. As this memoir dives deep into the questions, stigma, and complexity of losing a loved one to suicide, it vividly explores the resilience that comes when you learn to ride the wave.

A message from the author

First, I want to give my condolences. If you have found my website or book, it is likely that you have either lost someone to suicide or know of someone who has. I am sorry. Suicide loss at its core, is difficult and can feel extremely lonely.

Part of my reason for creating this website and writing the book about my dad was so others would know they are not alone in their grief. The other part was to honor my dad, Jay Dean Jones, whom I lost to suicide in August 2010. I wanted a way to pay tribute to his life because he was more than the way he died. I hope that the resources, free devotional, and book bring healing to you. Thank you for allowing me to share my story and please remember, you are never alone.
